Kudat: Tranditional Long House
Day 3 : The Tip of Borneo
Saturday, 11 August 2007
We started at 7.30am. Along with Shirley and Ms. Tan, four of us, we rent a cab and
driven north to Kudat. (RM300)

Kudat is a major town in Sabah at the northern extreme of Borneo island. Therefore,
it is referred to as the Tip of Borneo. This town can also be considered as an
historical attraction of Sabah, because Kudat was the capital long before Malaysia
was formed.

Along the way to Kudat, we passed through many small towns / villages. Each of
them has their own stall where the villagers sell their own products from their farms,
like local fruit.

We also got down from the cab to browse the fruit stalls. Our driver, Uncle Yap
recommend us to try a local fruit call "Tarap". It looks like Durian and Cempedak.
You can see from our picture. Those "Tarap" are all wild and can only be found in
Sabah.

Inside the "Tarap", you will find segments of soft white flesh with a very delicate
flavor. It’s easiest to remove them with a small fork. Each segment have a soft seed
that is discarded. It tastes like one of Indonesian fruit - Manggis.

Uncle Yap drove the cab safe and steady. As he said, buffalo, cattle, pets and
villagers always cross the road without giving any signal and they do not pay any
attention to on-coming traffic. They will cross and stop as they wish oblivious to any
danger may arise. If you were there, do remember - drive carefully.

After 4 hours drive, we reached Kudat Rungus Longhouse.

The Rungus people is a sub-group of Kadazan/Dusun community, are known for
their longhouse. As you can see from our pictures, the long house was made by
bamboo and tree skin. You can find a lot of Rungus handicraft, the beads necklaces
and bracelets and honey there. They also offer night stay at their long house. You will
be dined with traditional cuisine, taught the Rungus dance and etc. Because of our
time constraints, we just stayed there for 1 or 2 hours for the cultural attraction, then
we headed off the tip of borneo.

It was another 1 hours drive. Finally, we reached the Tip of Borneo. At the Tip of
Borneo, "Simpang Mengayau of Kudat", you can see the breath-taking view of wide
and open coastline. It is considered one of the most beautiful spots in Sabah, and all
the work is done by the nature.

The stretch of sea water with South China Sea on your left and the Sulu Sea on your
right. Wow...the view was so great.
